Know Your Numbers, Understand Your Normal
When it comes to our health, we’re surrounded by numbers.
Blood pressure. Cholesterol. Blood sugar. BMI. Heart rate.
But how many of us actually know our own numbers, or understand what they mean?
At KnowU Wellbeing, I believe health checks should be about much more than being told whether a result is “good” or “bad”.
It’s not about what’s wrong with you. It’s about what’s going on for you.
Your numbers are part of your story
A single result rarely tells the whole story.
Your numbers sit alongside things like your sleep, stress, movement, nourishment, family history, work, hormones, medication and what’s happening in your life right now.
That context matters.
Knowing your numbers gives you a useful snapshot of where you are today. Checking them over time can help you begin to understand your normal, notice changes and make informed decisions about your wellbeing.
Sometimes, a number may also highlight something worth following up with your GP or another healthcare professional.
What numbers are worth knowing?
There are several measurements that can give us useful information about our cardiovascular and metabolic health.
Blood Pressure
Blood pressure measures the pressure of blood in your arteries as your heart pumps and rests.
High blood pressure often has no obvious symptoms, which is one reason having it checked can be so valuable.

Cholesterol
Cholesterol isn’t simply one number, and it certainly isn’t all “bad”.
A full cholesterol profile can include total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides. Looking at these together gives us a much more useful picture than total cholesterol alone.
HbA1c
HbA1c is a blood test that gives an indication of your average blood glucose levels over approximately the previous two to three months.
It can help identify whether blood glucose is sitting within the expected range or whether further investigation may be appropriate.
Omega Balance
Omega-3 and omega-6 are essential fatty acids that both have important roles within the body.
Looking at your fatty acid profile and the balance between them can offer another piece of information when thinking about nutrition and longer-term wellbeing.
The number isn’t the destination
Knowing your numbers is useful.
Understanding what you can do with that information is even more useful.
A result might prompt you to move a little more, look at what you’re eating, prioritise sleep, reduce alcohol, manage stress differently or simply keep doing what you’re already doing.
For somebody else, exactly the same conversation might look completely different.
That’s why at KnowU, the conversation matters just as much as the measurement.
Small changes count
Looking after your health doesn’t have to mean completely changing your life overnight.
Walking more often.
Adding more fibre or colourful foods to your meals.
Building some strength work into your week.
Finding ways to protect your sleep.
Taking a proper lunch break.
Getting outside.
Booking the appointment you’ve been putting off.
Sometimes the most sustainable changes are the ones that feel almost too small to matter.
They add up.
Don’t wait until something feels wrong
We often pay attention to our health when our body gives us a reason to.
But many important health markers can change without us feeling any different.
Knowing your baseline gives you something to work from. It can provide reassurance, highlight something worth keeping an eye on, or simply start a conversation about how you’re feeling and what you’d like to improve.
You don’t need to be unwell to check in with your wellbeing.
